Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed that he differed with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdogan on the permanent "five members" of the UN Security Council and the need to abolish the veto.
Speaking at the end of the Valdai Forum in Sochi, Putin said: "If we talk about the permanent "five members" of the Security Council and the veto, then I do not want to shake this foundation. We need to think about how to make the Security Council more balanced."
He continued, "Different solutions are possible, and if the veto is torpedoed, the organization will die on the same day and will turn into the League of Nations and that's it. It will be just a platform for discussions."
The Russian president reiterated his support for Erdogan when he said that "after the Second World War and the establishment of the United Nations, there was a certain balance of power, but now it is changing."
Putin warned that "mistakes should not be made in reforming the United Nations... There is no need to argue over this issue."
